There is no safe button to save if you want to close the app. The autosave might miss a short period of time then. So a safe button would be a good addition to the side bar

Thanks for the suggestion! Here is how saving works in ink-notes, because closing the app can't lose your work:
Automatic saving while you write
Every change (stroke, eraser, text, moving objects, new page, …) is saved automatically in the background.
The app waits until you pause for 1.5 seconds and then writes all changes at once. If you write without any pause, it still saves at least every 10 seconds.
Saving never interrupts drawing: it happens in a separate background thread.
Each page is written to a temporary file first and only replaces the old file once the new one is completely on disk. So even if the computer crashes in the middle of saving, you always have either the old or the new version of the page, never a broken file.
Closing the app
When you close the window (or press Ctrl+Q), ink-notes first writes everything that is still waiting and only quits once that is done. There is no short period that gets skipped. Switching to another notebook also saves everything first.
If saving fails (e.g. the disk is full), the app does not quit. It shows a dialog where you can retry, write an emergency copy of the unsaved pages, or cancel and keep working.
Saving manually and checking the status
Ctrl+S saves immediately.
The small dot on the ☰ button in the sidebar shows the status: green = everything saved, orange = changes waiting to be saved, yellow = saving right now, red = a saving error. You can see the same status as text in the ☰ menu under "STATUS" and in the window title.
The only case where something can be lost is if the app is killed abruptly (power loss, a crash, or force-killing the process) – then at most the last few seconds of changes (usually the last 1.5 seconds, at most 10) are missing. A save button would not help there either, since it also only saves when it is pressed.
